Music/Activity Camp 2001

I believe Camp No. 1 of Williams Unlimited provided a quality experience for Williams’ campers on many levels. The experience may prove a determining milestone for further self-development and will certainly provide a defining memory for all who participated.

A remarkable metamorphosis took place as a small group of strangers – adults and children – fused into a cohesive team within the week. Many skills became evident all channelled into an energy singularly focussed on quality of living for the 8 Williams campers. While the older, wiser folk - relatives and friends and professionals - applied themselves willingly to the task I must commend the younger “caras” or friends whose sincerity, sensitivity and humanistic values were an intrinsic part of the quality experience. I think it was a defining experience in their lives too.

The Williams campers endeared themselves to all as we became familiar with their individual personalities and gifts.

Anne Marie - the baby of the camp, stole all our hearts – a natural-born Judy Garland on and off stage.

Donal – a “cool man”, a keen and sensitive performer destined to charm the ladies.

Patricia – could buy and sell us all with her talent, wit and wisdom, not to mention her “bug” expertise.

Alan – another “cool dude” and sports enthusiast who shone on stage with “cool bro” Jason

Karen – whose expertise as a piano accompanist continues to delight and surprise, as does her encyclopaedic knowledge of tunes

Rosanna – “groover extraordinaire”, able to wow the audience with her stage presence, who has now added piano improvisation to her other skills

Sighile – whose gentle and shy nature belied her spirited performance skills on piano, voice, percussion and dance.

Last, but by no means least, Fiona – whose expertise at marking the defining moments with appropriate words gave us all insights into the feelings of campers. Fiona really pushed her energy levels to participate in all activities assisted by the odd puff or two!

I must comment on the “Share” facility at Lisnaskea. A truly remarkable place I feel privileged to have spent time there. Apart from the breathtaking scenery on the shores of Lough Erne with all its attendant water activities, the true spirit of humanity – “sharing and caring” demonstrated by the international volunteers was humbling. Their Arts Arena has so much potential and the choice of activities relevant and meaningful.

A defining moment for me was the performance of Joseph’s Technicolour Dreamcoat (sort of) where all came together as one – campers, parents, siblings, caras, and teachers. A significant foundation has been established which hopefully will blossom and develop into many more quality experiences for all associated with Williams Syndrome.

Congratulations and well done to all.
